Hi everyone, I haven't been on here for some time. My Mum is in hospital with a blocked bowel and pneumonia and now has c diff. She is seriously ill and not expected to leave hospital. The consultant has said it's too dangerous to operate as her hernia is wrapped around the intestine and she is very elderly.

My question is whether or not i should visit. I am on enbrel and methotrexate injections. I have spoke to rheumatology and they don't advise it although they have said obviously i'm going to want to visit Mum especially in the circumstances. I could go with a mask, gown and gloves and then shower and wash my clothes when i go home and also avoid touching anything in the room she is in.

Has anyone else been in this situation? I would appreciate any feed back.Confused

What a dilemma. It takes some thought but in the end it's your Mother you are
talking about. It MUST be your decision not the powers that be. Although compromised by drugs
if you take extra precautions it might be worth the risk. Have you other family members to talk
to? How about a smart phone video Yes I'm sitting on a very uncomfortable fence. Anne

What a dilemma. If it helps, most cross infections go the other way. It's the visitors who bring the germs, not the ward or patient any more. No professional is going to recommend you go because of the potential liability should something happen. If you take some sensible precautions to limit contact with infective items such as tissues and make liberal use of the hand cleansers that will be on the ward when you arrive and leave etc you will minimise the risk.

Hello Crazychick,

I completely understand your situation. I had a similar scare whilst my Nan was in hospital. "She's my NAN and I'm going to visit her!" I'm sure you have ranted the same. I barried up. Looked as attractive as hell in my plastic apron, mask, hat and gloves and it made my Nans day to see me looking so great! She didn't recognise me at first and thought I was a porter taking her to theatre!

Its human nature to care and if you take all precautions you can there is nothing to stop you going in.

I hope you have already been to see her and that she is getting the right treatment and is comfortable!

My heart goes out to you and yours!

Hello CrazyChick

What an awful position to find yourself in, my heart goes out to you.

I'd go with what my heart wants. I'm sure that if you take sensible precautions, and sanitize your hands straight way after visiting her and do what else you have planned you should be fine.

Sending you and your mum gentle hugs

Dear Shirley

My heart goes out to you as my dear old mum was in a similar situation.

She suffered from several bouts of c diff - when she was at home I admit I was reckless and let my heart rule my head- as I lived 2.5 hrs drive away, no way was I not going to see her- I was prepared to take that risk ( not suggesting you take any risks though!) and thankfully I was ok.

My personal gut feeling is- if I was in the same situation, given her circumstances, I wouldn't hesitate to 'gown up' and visit. she's your mum, and any time you can have with her is precious.

I hope you reach a decision which is right for you.

Sending you my love and prayers at this difficult time

Thanks everyone for the replys.

I have made the decision to go on Sunday to see her and take extra precautions with a mask, gown and gloves. Mum has had very bad diareah today but hopefully by Sunday it won't be so bad. I'm glad i had been a few times before she got the c diff.

It's so difficult when it's your Mum and obviously i want to go. This RA causes so many problems. Scared

Have a great weekend all of you.

Love Shirley x
